a dumpling, potsticker, gyoza, jiaozi, mandu, whatever you want to call it - It's one of the only things I know how to cook.  I enjoy cooking, it's just that my mom owns our kitchen so I only cook once in a blue moon.
When I do get in my cooking zone, my mom tries to give me space but don't be surprised if you see her sneaking around trying to wash my veggies or prep my bowls for me.   I'm no Rachel Ray, but rest assured I would never let my family starve.

Today's menu:  Meatless Potsticker. And Berry-filled Wonton dessert.

    1.  I tried a new recipe - rather than use pork, I tried to go all healthy and use tofu, squash, carrots, clear potato-starch vermicelli, and garlic.  All I was missing are those black mushrooms you rehydrate in water, but I'd have to make do without, no biggie.

    2.  You mix it all together, and voilà!  OK, so it doesn't look as pretty as the final product.

    3. It took me over an hour to wrap like 100 of these suckers.  I overdid it and made too much filling, which I'm going to save for some eggrolls tomorrow.   If you make too many potstickers, you can always freeze these and cook them another day.

    4. Fry 'em up, and this is what you get.  I don't know how long, I don't use recipes or times, I just eyeball it and when it's done, it's done.

    5. But guotie without soysauce and vinegar is like fries without ketchup.  I'm pretty fond of the apple-cider vinegar and I always do the original soy sauce, none of that low-sodium light crap.  I know my blood pressure might kick my butt 20 years from now.

    6. I felt like carrying the Asian theme over to dessert, too, so here's my berry concoction.   My mom likes to eat my wonton chips alone, but I like to add a little fruit parfait on top.

    7.  Decided it was missing something - so how about some almonds?

I had the pleasure of visiting the campus of USC not too long ago, and discovered this is a gem of a school hidden in the concrete jungles of downtown LA.  Once you drive past the gates, it's almost as if you've traveled thousands of miles to some quaint city in the east coast.  Many of the buildings stand their ground with brick walls and intermittent arches.  I might sound like I'm exaggerating just a little bit, but it was nicer than expected.

On another note.  Maybe it was common among LA natives - but during high school, we had enormous rivalries between UCLA and USC.  We weren't even accepted into college yet, but we all had so much pride in whichever side we jumped on.  People wore their respective colleges of choice's clothing, backpacks, carried folders, key chains... My best friend at the time, her dad would take us to campus and drop us off so we could hang out at the bookstore.  Yeah, that's right, the bookstore.  Do other kids do that?  Are you sifting through your closet for your old Bruin/Trojan sweatshirt?  Are you guilty?  Maybe it was just my wacky high school.  Looking back on it now, it was so silly.  In the greater scheme of things, I've learned success does not stem from what institution you end up at, it's about what you make of yourself wherever you go, whatever you do.

Waiting to watch a good movie.  I enjoy watching movies on a regular basis like most of the general population.

The last couple of weeks has been a bit of a standstill.   All the summer blockbusters have already passed, and the cool award-winning type films don't start until winter... what's a movie-loving girl to do?

Here are (a few) previews of movies I'm inclined to watch.

Fun and Dentist going together, is like oil and water, the two just don't mix.  I would say most people loathe this experience, but hey, you do what you gotta do.
Dedicated to alph and his recent trip, enjoy!

By the way, Mr. Bean just brings back some good old memories.  While most kids grew up watching Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers, my fondest childhood TV memories revolved around Mr. Bean!

And in today's news?  OK, it's more like yesterday's news, but still post-worthy.  My shining star, Kanye, gets press for throwing the paparazzi's camera  to the ground. I thought it was funny.  But with great timing.  Even if it wasn't intentional marketing, I'd say it was the smartest way to build up some more hype since his album "808's and Heartbreak" is set to drop 12/16!  Can't wait!

A date never to be forgotten, heroes and loved ones always to be remembered.

Recommended by K, my mom and I just finished watching 102 Minutes That Changed America.

I think the hardest part to stomach, was to watch the people fall out of the building and plummet to the ground, or hanging from the sides of the windows waving flags for help.  You desperately want to help them, even now, though it is long over, and it's frustrating because you can't do anything about it.  And all those who ran in to try and help them whose lives were also lost.. it's overwhelming...  It's completely mind numbing to absorb the shocking initial reactions of the people who were actually there.  My thoughts are with you.

..and play ball with the big boys.

Cup half-full:  I'm glad she is not wasting such great height.  Look at it this way, since she is only allowed to play with the girls, she will excel and it will be easier for her to be the best of the best.  If she's looking for a challenge, she can play pick-up games outside of her leagues/schools on the side and still better her skills.  The WNBA was created to open doors for future female ballers everywhere.  I can't imagine women in the NBA.  I imagine it would be awkward in the locker room.

From a practical standpoint, on a physical level I think men and women are simply designed for different leagues - not because women are any less skilled than men, but for obvious reasons such as body type, height, muscle mass, etc.  Men are just factually bigger. I'm all for the "anything you can do, I can do better" mentality and drive, but at the same time I don't think it is a big deal for men and women to play in their own separate leagues.  Besides, she will meet other girls who are at her playing level as she gets older.  She just happens to be at a big advantage right now looming over all her opponents, so I don't think it's that bad of a situation to be in.  Keep it up!

U-N-I to the verse!  Meet two of my favorite hip-hop emcees, collaborated from a city I spent half my childhood in (reppin' Inglewood!)

Thurzday (w/ the hat) and Y-O (cradling the Nintendo console) are depicted below. (Photos courtesy of ld/ec/dh)

U-N-I recently won best breakout LA artists at the 2008 MTV VMA's and their path is headed skyhigh from here.  Combined, Thurz and Y-O bring a refreshing style including clever lyrics and chill beats, you can just vibe to.  I first heard about them through the Slam vine, from an article featured in the Kobe-cover issue touching on their kick inspired song K.R.E.A.M.  Kicks Rule Everything Around Me.  I can't decide what my favorite song is, I like them all.  If you're a hip-hop head, give them a try.

It's like Borat meeting Fast & The Furious. Only better. Comedy - to each his own. I happen to find this hilarious.

My heart skips a beat to:
That really good song that you can put on repeat without getting tired of it, the perfect swish from nothing but net, bright colors that scream attention which I don't like to bask in, cars that remind me of cartoons, the right sneakers for every occasion, the honest "I've-missed-you" look my dog gives me when I come home, a quick run in the dark imagining someone is chasing me, anything kawaiiiiii, frozen desserts of many fulfilling kinds, heroes or arch-nemeses, life ambitions and carpe diem actions, exercising brain power, exploring So Cal, and eating food that is yummy-yummy, in my tummy. Did I mention I'm a web-junkie? Long live internet!
