Fri, 03 Feb 2012 15:27:00 -0800 February 4, 2012: World Cancer Day http://giveandgo.posterous.com/february-4-2012-world-cancer-day http://giveandgo.posterous.com/february-4-2012-world-cancer-day

From Stand Up To Cancer "One in three cancer deaths can be prevented through altering lifestyle habits, such as eating healthy or exercising regularly. The 2012 World Cancer Day initiative will operate with a mission to collect pledges of individual lifestyle changes, as opposed to strictly monetary funds, and will encourage participants to commit to healthy choices."

I've always believed by making healthy choices, we can stay healthy.  While it may not be a guarantee to ward off the chances of getting cancer, it definitely does not hurt to do what we can to prevent it.  We can also use this rule of thumb to help prevent all other sorts of diseases that are easily inevitable from harm done to our bodies.  So whether you pledge to put out a cigarette, drink less alcohol, or eat less red meat, see the doctor for a regular checkup.. every little bit will help us out in the long term.

Fri, 27 Jan 2012 09:20:00 -0800 A Parent's Love is Unconditional http://giveandgo.posterous.com/a-parents-love-is-unconditional http://giveandgo.posterous.com/a-parents-love-is-unconditional

I never would've guessed that this heavy commercial is from a rice distributor. My parents always tell me a son/daughter can never possibly equate the love that parents have for their children.  We will turn 60 years old one day, and they will still see us as their baby.  My dad still picks out fishbones for me, and my mom still tells me to wear socks when it's a cold day.  I'm almost certain if it ever came down to having to piggy back me to walk even as a grown adult, they would do it without hesitation.  How do you repay your parents for the love that they surrender to you unconditionally?  Despite petty trivial things we may go through every once in a while, at the end of the day we should never take our family for granted.

With 2012 ahead of us, my main concern is to stay healthy! Because when I'm down, I go down. Some people when sick are unfazed.. they can still function normally and people couldn't even tell that they're under. When I get sick, my entire world falls apart. I feel the need to punch myself to get on with it. Hence, I must prevent the problem before it starts. Cheers to you and your health and if you have any other tips to stay fit as a fiddle, share! :) Let's make this an awesome year, shall we?

Toughdays

[via Deron]

In addition to my loving friends and family, I'm lucky to have what I endearingly call my tweet-family.  A group of individuals threaded together based upon common interests.  Deron, Francis, Rey, Isaiah, Sam, Harish.  Talented, friendly, amazing people.  It doesn't matter where we are from, or what we do.  We were brought together by our common love for basketball, and more specifically, the Lakers.  Some of my real-life friends and family don't understand how the whole Twitter thing works.  I think it is such a great networking tool to bring people from all walks of life together, via the interwebs.

Fri, 11 Mar 2011 11:59:00 -0800 8.9 Magnitude Japan Earthquake: How We Can Help http://giveandgo.posterous.com/89-magnitude-japan-earthquake-how-we-can-help http://giveandgo.posterous.com/89-magnitude-japan-earthquake-how-we-can-help

As much of the world watches in disbelief, this colossal quake has caused more havoc with the dangerous tsunami that has ensued afterwards. I'd like to take a couple minutes to send heartfelt thoughts to those who are in Japan continuing to endure the aftermath of this natural disaster and to also drive awareness to the immense response we can take to help others.  I'm proud to be American because of our quick response to provide aid to other countries.  Despite the fact that the phones have been down in Japan, I'm impressed at the quick photos, videos, and status updates received directly from our friends in Japan via social media avenues.  The internet is just another way we can stay connected with one other directly as a rapid transit of live information.

I cannot keep my eyes off of CNN and their coverage.  Thank goodness we have live coverage both online and on TV.

Boston.com always offers amazing photos, see the news in pictures.

Various disaster relief funds have already been set up, learn how you can help.

Quake2

Addendum:  As much as I am a supporter of giving to great causes, I've also had some mixed feelings regarding the sense of quick-to-help urgency via monetary donation.  Be wary about how you choose to donate, in light of some recent articles that have suggested we should not choose to solely donate in times of crisis, and rather help on an ongoing basis for world issues.  Always do your due diligence before you decide to give.  Just the other day I got approached at a supermarket from a religious group.  While I want to give them the benefit of the doubt they have good intentions, I prefer to make my donations where I am rest assured the right help will get to the right cause.

Renew

President-elect Obama asks us to renew America together.   In the spirit of MLK day which was originally intended as a day of service, he is asking citizens to join him in serving our communities.  A great man, Gandhi once said, "Be the change you wish to see."

Find out how you can take up Obama's call to service on January 19, 2009:

On the site, find local events from food drives to blood drives, clean-ups to trainings – so many ways to volunteer and contribute to nationwide change.

Wed, 26 Nov 2008 10:38:00 -0800 Give to Others http://giveandgo.posterous.com/give-to-others http://giveandgo.posterous.com/give-to-others

As we approach Thanksgiving, let's take time to not only be grateful for the people we love and what we are blessed with, let's also remember to give to those who may not be as fortunate as we are.

Non-profit organizations that help the homeless often host Thanksgiving meals and can often use a helping hand.  You can always help volunteer this Thanksgiving at your local community shelter or mission.   Or why just limit it to Thanksgiving?  Donations are welcome throughout the year whether it is monetary, food, or even used clothing and goods.

Help Feed America:  http://feedingamerica.org/

Or research some of the local organizations in your area to find out how you can help give to others.

Tue, 18 Nov 2008 10:26:35 -0800 Clearly Canadian - Global Water http://giveandgo.posterous.com/clearly-canadian-global-water http://giveandgo.posterous.com/clearly-canadian-global-water Yesterday, I was complaining to Jasmine about how so many of the current drinking water sold today are laced with that disgusting artificial wanna-be fake sugar.  Anything with splenda, sucralose, whatever I simply will not consume. I felt duped recently, because I had bought a refreshing light apple juice cocktail, and when I came home to enjoy it, I spat it out.  I realized I missed the microscopic print on the label, "with sucralose".  Ugh, such a disappointment.

Jasmine poked at her own thoughts, and asked me if I ever drank this refreshing sparkling water back in the day that had a hint of fruit.   A hint of fruit?  And then it hit me, like when you try and solve a math problem for hours and the numbers start making sense out of the blue. Yes, Clearly Canadian!

There was a period in the 90's when Clearly Canadian was like the best drink ever.  My family doesn't preach soda around the house, simply because my dad's one of those health-conscious people who shuns extra unwanted calories.  But the two exceptions he allowed while I was growing up, was Perrier and Clearly Canadian.  I could reason with him that they are sparkling water which clearly does not qualify as a soda.  I remember that crisp cool refreshing bite after your first sip - the oh-so-fruity goodness (without that artificial nasty aftertaste a lot of the current fancy fruity waters leave behind on your palate).  But for whatever reason, maybe they stopped selling it locally, I have not enjoyed a Clearly Canadian in 10 years.

So after doing a little research today, I discovered it still exists!  Hooray!   And they also give back!  For every Clearly Canadian beverage sold, a percentage of their funds are donated to help communities who need safe water supplies through projects to create needed wells and water sources.  http://www.clearly.ca/files/global-water.php

My quest to find a bottle nearby begins.
